Arthritis

Another common condition that we regularly treat at Edward Murphy Osteo is Arthritis.

Arthritis is a condition that affects both men and women and doesn’t discriminate against age, affecting both young and older people, including children. It is a joint condition, where stiffness, swelling and pain in the joints are common symptoms. Arthritis can also affect any and all of the body’s joints and can have significant impacts adversely affecting the quality of life of sufferers of this debilitating illness.

At Edward Murphy Osteo, we see often and aim to provide effective treatment options for the many different types of arthritis, which include;

  • degenerative joint disease, also known and referred to as osteoarthritis
  • rheumatoid arthritis
  • juvenile arthritis, which is affects children and young people
  • gout
  • lupus
  • psoriatic arthritis

The two most common forms of arthritis that we treat, and Edward Murphy’s Osteo are Rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. Typically, we see patients who are suffering from rheumatoid arthritis experiencing pain, inflammation and swelling of the joints, which is part of an autoimmune disease, where the immune system is essentially responsible for the damage to the joints, in error, leading to the pain and discomfort. Our patients suffering from rheumatoid arthritis are more commonly female and aged between 30 to 60 years of age.

On the other hand, our patients who are suffering from osteoarthritis, have pain, inflammation and swelling due to the wear and tear of the joints and general degeneration which normally occurs as a result of the ageing process. Whilst not as common as rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis, at Edward Murphy Osteo we are also experienced in treating patients who are suffering from psoriatic arthritis. Psoriasis sufferers generally experience red patches of skin topped with silvery scales. In terms of arthritis the symptoms are similar to that of both rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis in terms of inflammation and pain, with these symptoms only further complicated by the skin condition.

At Edward Murphy Osteo we aim to provide a comprehensive treatment regime for arthritis sufferers, with our holistic approach ensuring that our patients receive treatment for the symptoms but are also provided with a detailed exercise plan going forward, designed to strengthen their joints and improve their overall quality of life.

We use a combination of manual massage techniques including gentle articulation, massage, stretching and joint mobilisation techniques, with the aim to optimise the function of affected areas, alleviating pain and reducing other symptoms such as swelling and inflammation, significantly improving flexibility of the joints. Our well-developed techniques aim to release muscle tension within the affected joints and improve movement and mobility of our patients, as well as promoting better joint health.
